5 Easy Ways to Transform Your Living Room

It won't be long before entertaining completely moves indoors for the fall and winter. Is your living room ready?

Here are five points to consider:

  1. Adequate seating

The rule of thumb is at least 5 seats. This can be achieved by having either a loveseat or sofa with a few arm chairs. Benches or ottomans can serve multiple purposes as well, one being additional spaces for guests.

2. Functional floor plan

There should be at least one conversational area and an easy way to get in and out of it. Furniture should be pulled away from the walls, and side and coffee tables should be within arm’s reach.

3. Proper lighting

As the sun gets lower in the sky and the days get shorter, nobody wants to be straining their eyes to see the person across the room. A combination of lighting sources are often helpful: sconces, table and floor lamps, ceiling fixtures. A dimmer switch is ideal!

4. Aesthetic reflects you

What do people feel when they enter your home? Your living room should give them hints as to what’s important to you: your interests, the people in your life, travels, etc.

5. Final Touches

I like to reference the 3 P’s: pictures, pillows, plants. Photos on the wall and/or tables, art on the walls, pillows for the sofas, and plants and flowers anywhere and everywhere. Keep blankets on the sofa or in a woven basket nearby for chillier evenings.

Ultimately, you want to make your living room feel cozier and make sense for your lifestyle. As always, only decorate with what you love.
