Gas vs. Electric Fireplace: Which style fits your home and lifestyle?

There’s much to consider when purchasing a new fireplace. Fireplaces are desirable because of their warmth, their glow, and the cozy feel they provide. Wood-burning fireplaces are beautiful, but the more affordable options today are gas and electric.

Here I break down the pros and cons of both a gas and electric fireplace and how to determine which is right for you.

Gas Fireplace

Pros: 1. Natural flame

           2. Low operating costs

           3. Puts out about 3x more heat than electric; great to heat a larger space

Cons: 1. Pricier purchase and install than electric

            2. Needs a natural gas line

            3. Must allow for outside exhaust; ventless gas fireplaces aren’t legal in all states

            4. Puts out about 3x more heat than electric

            5. Hot to the touch- could pose danger to kids/pets, etc.

            6. Produce carbon monoxide

Electric Fireplace

Pros: 1. No issues with carbon monoxide emissions

           2. Safer choice for children and pets

           3. Don’t need to be vented

           4. Low operating costs

           5. Low maintenance to clean

           6. Lower cost to purchase and install than gas

Cons: 1. Illusion of a flame with video/lights

           2. Puts out about 3x less heat than gas

So what do you think? Do you have a gas, electric or wood-burning fireplace? Are you happy with it?
