How to Create the Perfectly Lit Space

Lighting can make or break a room. As I age, I’m more sensitive to harsh lighting. It shows every flaw and can feel abrasive and exposing. It’s also incredibly uncomfortable! Likewise, if a room is too dark and not lit properly, I want to leave it immediately. Any beautiful decor or finishes are left unseen.

Essentially, if the lighting in a room is perfect, you shouldn’t notice it. Everyone feels relaxed and looks their best. So how do you do this? Read on.

  • Place mirrors near lighting sources.

  • Use a dimmer.

  • Use LED lights. No flourescent!

  • Use a combination of overhead lighting, table and floor lamps, and sconces.

  • Simplify window treatments.

  • Consider the function of the room. For example, kitchens and offices call for brighter lighting than living rooms and bedrooms.
