The Ultimate Guide to Creating a Beautiful Gallery Wall

Do you have bare walls you’d like to adorn with “something”, but you’re not sure what to do exactly? I’m a huge fan of gallery walls because they can be deeply personal and artistic. Maybe you’re hesitant to get started because you're overwhelmed with the idea of where to begin, how to hang each photo perfectly, where to buy frames, what to hang, etc. Fear no more! We get into that here.

In my previous home, I hung a gallery wall displaying artists and musicians I admired. I bought what I liked, laid them on the floor in the layout I desired, took a photo, and hung them without measuring. I feel wall art like this helps my guests get to know me a little bit better by understanding my interests, and it's consistent with my personal style. Check out the photo below.

Similarly, I hung a wall gallery up the stairwell of our family photos. My goal was to create an artistic visual family tree. Insider tip, I recommend mpix.com for developing some of the highest quality photos around. I bought various gold frames from Michael’s in several sizes, and hung the frames “free hand” up the stairwell. I eyeballed the distance between frames as I went. Whatever was pleasing visually, I went with it.

So how can you do this yourself? I'll break it down here.

  1. Decide what you want to display. Family photos, hobbies, collections, etc. Make sure it is relevant to you.

  2. Don’t spend a ton on frames. It’s just not necessary. Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Etsy are all great vendors. I bought my musician and artist portraits on Allposters.com.

  3. Practice your layout on the floor and take a photo.

  4. Reference your photo as you hang. Go with what feels right. Let go of perfection. Viola!
