How to Style a Rug in Any Room

A rule of thumb in interior design is to start with a rug and build a room around it.

Indeed, a rug can determine the entire style, feel, and color scheme of a room. I adore vintage Persian rugs personally, and you don’t have to spend a fortune to snag one. Check out estate sales, vintage stores, and many vendors online. Pinterest is a fantastic search engine as well. As always, an interior designer is an invaluable professional when it comes to sourcing materials.

Back to styling a rug. Here are some helpful tips below:

  1. In a bedroom, I prefer to turn an area rug horizontally, the fringe (if it has it) on either side of the bed, with the rug beginning about 1/4 of the way down from the head of the bed. Another tip is to make sure there are 12-18 inches of rug extended on either side of your bed. You don’t want to step onto a cold floor!

  2. Place rugs/runners in high traffic areas, like hallways, mudrooms, and kitchens. Confirm it’s durable.

  3. In a dining room, make sure the rug fits under the table as well as the chairs, even when they’re pulled out.

  4. Ensure your rug is big enough for your space and all key pieces of furniture fit on it. It’s acceptable if back legs of sofas are off a rug.

  5. Know how to clean it. Whether it’s spill-proof or wool, take care of it accordingly. There seem to be better washable options out there every day also.

  6. Always use a rug pad. Protect your rug and floors, extend the life of a rug, and keep it in place.
