I Need Cabinet Doors; Where Do I Start?

Example of partial overlay, recessed panel

You’re in the thick of a remodel, and suddenly your contractor asks you what kind of cabinets you want. Wait, what? Ideally, you’d have a designer guiding you on design and material selection, but either way: Fear not! Below, I give you the lowdown on the types and the popular styles of cabinet doors.

5 popular styles:

Recessed- a recessed center panel and raised edge profile, edges can be beveled

Raised- features a raised center and grooved framework

Shaker- similar to recessed, but with a clean-cut 90 degree recess in the panel

Mullion- features a glass center panel, optional glass grids

Slab- uses one piece of continuous material, clean flawless surface

3 types:

Inset- doors sit flush with the frame and expose the face of the cabinet

Partial overlay- door partially covers the face of your cabinet’s frames

Full overlay- no framework visible, doors cover the cabinet’s frames

Please remember there’s no wrong answer here as long as the question of functionality is addressed adequately. With all design and decor, choose what you love and you’ll rarely regret it.
