Apartment Living: Making Small Spaces Stand Out
Regardless of what kind of home you live in, its size shouldn’t hinder expression of your style or impact checking the boxes of what’s important to you. In fact, smaller spaces provide massive opportunities to showcase fabulous design creativity that won’t be glossed over by you or your guests. In my own home, I’ve layered rugs, placed mirrors in every room, and added an abundance of plants and gallery walls of personal photos and artwork. In my client’s apartment in New York, pictured above, she didn’t want to do any painting or wallpapering, so we designed wall-shelving, added mirrors and lighting, and strategically placed furniture so the room worked for her.
Below, I added some tips to enrich your own smaller space:
Add mirrors to reflect light and open up a room.
Paint the walls and woodwork the same color, which draws the eye upwards and elongates walls.
Use nooks and alcoves to your advantage, by adding lighting, storage, seating, etc.
Never compromise functionality. It has to make sense.
Choose ceiling, table, or wall lighting over floor lighting.
Consider built-in shelving and storage.
Look into a tv that doubles as a mirror.
Incorporate a modular sofa with all that storage.
Fill the walls!
