Never Kill An Orchid Again

I've been going to Trader Joe’s every 3 weeks or so and replacing my dead orchid. I keep killing these guys! Orchids aren’t cheap, and they bring an elegant, artistic, sculptural element to room design. There are countless species and they can live for decades, blooming twice a year. It’s been on my list for a while to research just why they keep dying and how to keep them alive going forward. Allow me to share this knowledge with you below.

Step-by-step guide on how to stop orchid murder:

  1. Have your orchid by a window facing west, east, or south to ensure it gets plenty of indirect sunlight.

  2. Water them once a week with an ice cube—but check the roots first! They should be light green, almost white. If they're dark green, you’re overwatering. This is key!!

  3. Prune the spikes as close to the base as possible once the bloom cycle is complete.

  4. Keep them away from a vent, and bring them into the bathroom when you take a steamy shower now and again.

I just bought a new orchid at Trader Joe’s and I’m hoping to graduate to a much larger orchid centerpiece if I can keep this baby alive. I’ll keep you posted!
