Artwork: To Frame or Not to Frame

In a recent project, I was astounded at the cost of custom framing, even though we worked with a well-known chain store. In some cases, the framing cost more than the actual piece! Completely insane. My general rule of thumb is that any work of art that is extra large, extra heavy, unusually shaped, or vintage should be custom framed. Also, shop around!

But does every work of art need to be framed in the first place? According to art museum curators, the answer is no. In my opinion, however, it depends on certain factors.

  1. What is the art work being used for?

  2. What is the room design?

  3. Will the work be exposed to direct sunlight?

  4. Will it maintain the integrity of the art?

I’ve worked with transparent frames and I’ve done frames without glass for canvas works of art. My preference is always framed art, as it effortlessly elevates the entire room. Ultimately, it’s a subjective decision.
