Does Your Room Feel Flat? Try an Accent Color!

Are you familiar with the terms tone, tint, hue and shade? If not, let’s get you acquainted. Understanding how adding in gray (tone), white (tint), or black (shade) to a hue (base color) is paramount to creating a cohesive and beautiful color scheme in a room.

If your space is feeling flat, consider adding in an accent color. Its job is to accentuate and enhance the base color(s) in a harmonious way. Accent colors should not clash with the base color. Note that accent colors are different from contrasting colors, or a “pop” of color. They take up about ⅓ of the colors in the room, and there can be a handful of them. Got a color wheel? The colors closest to the base color are harmonious accent colors. The colors across the wheel are contrasting colors

What about a white or gray room, you ask? This where you want to incorporate accent tones, or colors with gray added to them.

Creating a color palette is an exceptionally nuanced skill that requires adequate color memory, good understanding of color theory, and the ability to distinguish between even the most subtle differences in color. Hiring an interior designer can help you if you get stuck!
