Why You Should Add Design to Your Ceiling

I’ve noticed the fifth wall is often neglected or simply painted white, and yet decorating the ceiling can truly transform a space. Dimension can be added to a room with a unique ceiling paint color, by painting the ceiling the same colors as the walls, with plaster, wallpaper, or ceiling tiles. In this blog, I want to introduce some colleagues and vendors to demonstrate what I mean here.

A local colleague of mine, Carrie Chimenti of Chimenti Studios, specializes in Italian plaster and artistic wall and ceiling treatments. She’s also fabulous to collaborate with! A couple photos of her work can be seen below.

One of my favorite boutique wallpaper and textile vendors is Hex and Henbane, located in the UK. Below I featured a photo of their wallpaper on the walls, a Rockett St. George fixture, and Anaglypta ceiling tiles.

I also wanted to include a photo by the Instagram account, Belenko, of the restaurant Agatha in Kyiv. Absolutely jaw-dropping. Truly an inspiring account to follow.

Do you notice how much richness and drama is added when ceilings are decorated? Here are 5 specific goals that can be achieved by minding the fifth wall in your design plan.

  1. Highlight architectural details

  2. Raise or lower a ceiling, visually

  3. Make all walls cohesive throughout a room

  4. Add interest

  5. Tie in color scheme

Have you decorated your ceiling yet? If not, what’s holding you back?
