Creating a Gorgeous Home When You Have Kids

Having children is a lot of work. They make a lot of messes. I have three sons; I get it. But don’t despair! There are ways to have a beautiful, well-designed home that reflects you, as well as happy kids who aren’t being scolded every time they touch something “nice” or “breakable”. Read on.

  1. Invest in a quality rug. An antique rug will continue to last forever and you can build your color scheme around it. Wool rugs are also durable and easy to clean.

  2. Consider a bench at the kitchen table for extra seating. If you don’t use your dining room on a daily basis, think about converting it to a library or art room. A beautiful hutch can serve as a bookcase or art station organizer. Make your home functional and work for you.

  3. Get an entryway rug that does the job. A wool or washable rug are good options that repel moisture and are easy to clean.

  4.  Use multipurpose trunks and storage cabinets. Whether in main areas, playrooms or kid rooms, have a place for all the stuff that looks good when it’s closed.

  5. Display their collections and creations. Do they have a pretty sea glass collection? Put it in a jar or bowl on a shelf or counter. Frame their art work and make a gallery wall in the mudroom, family room, or kitchen.

  6. Choose kid friendly materials for couches, chairs, and sofas. Microfiber, velvet, and leather can withstand stains and the occasional jumping and launching of bodies, age well, and look refined. Consider a fabric ottoman or Moroccan pouf in lieu of a coffee table.
