Want a Dream Custom Closet? Read These Tips.

When I talk about dream custom closets, I don’t always mean a massive walk-in. Really! It’s truly incredible what you can do with a space; it all comes down to storage utilization. I’ve designed a handful of custom closets by now, and I’ve learned a few things along the way.

Let me share them with you…

  1. Assess what you want to store in the closet.

  2. Determine the amount of long and short hanging.

  3. Get creative with shelving and drawers- mirrored cabinet doors? LED lights? shelf/drawer dividers?

  4. Consider pull-out racks for scarves, ties, and belts.

  5. Maximize space by building closets to the ceiling and adding a rolling ladder if needed.

  6. Display shoes, sweaters, pants, jewelry and hats for easy accessorizing.

  7. Try not to hide anything in drawers other than undergarments, pajamas/lounge clothes and out of season clothing/shoes. If you don’t see it, you won’t use it!

  8. If you’ve got the space, consider an island with top and inner storage.

  9. Add a chair or bench to sit on or to lay your outfit out on.

  10. Consider adding LED lights to shelving and motion-sensored lighting in the closet.

  11. A full length mirror is a necessity.

  12. Don’t forget the laundry hamper! It can be built in as a roll out drawer if you have the space too.
