French Design: Do They Have it Right?

I recently returned from a trip to Paris; it was awe-inspiring! I’ve always been extremely curious about how they actually live. I’ve read books and articles about how we should emulate the French in practically every way, from how we raise our babies and how we eat, to fashion and style. So do they have it right?

Here are some key differences I see between American and French living/home layouts:

  1. Space and storage utilization: The French embrace simplicity, while Americans often emphasize quantity over quality. We can see this illustrated in oversized American laundry rooms, pantries, walk-in closets. The French just seem to have less stuff, and therefore, less need for large rooms for storage.

  2. Interior Design: The French lean towards a timeless design, as they’re often working with historical buildings. I noticed a balance between historical preservation and contemporary design while I was there. On the other hand, we see it all in America: from historical to new builds in every style.

  3. Floor plans: The US has embraced open concept in most homes, whether they’re knocking down walls or incorporating this into new construction. The French have not welcomed this layout, but some are moving in that direction. American kitchens are social, while French kitchens are mainly functional. In France, you’ll find water closets tucked away in small rooms, while the US likes an expansive bathroom footprint.

We can chalk up most of these differences in design to the respective cultures and the space available. My opinion? The French will always do it better. What about you: have you been to France? What have you noticed about their homes and design?
