Small Living Rooms: Good Design is Possible

Whether it’s a small apartment, condo or home, my goal is to build a layout with furniture and decor that works, that is functional and perhaps serves multiple purposes, and that still allows the space to breathe. This is where creativity comes in.

I have some ideas of how to do this.

  1. Mount sconces.

  2. Move furniture to face light source.

  3. Consider putting two sofas back to back if you have a long narrow space.

  4. Use rugs to separate areas.

  5. Scale down your furniture.

  6. Consider a banquette or built in furniture.

  7. Use mirrors to reflect light and make space appear larger.

  8. Float your furniture; move it away from the walls.

  9. Use the whole wall-to the ceiling-for hanging artwork and decor. It draws the eye up.

  10. Wallpaper or texturize that ceiling with lime wash or roman clay.

  11. Consider built in bookshelves in one area or near the crown molding.

  12. Use the room’s existing elements.
