Why Buy Vintage?

I grew up going to the antique store my grandmother owned in St. Louis. I remember the feelings that walking through the store and touching the items evoked: a comforting nostalgia, timelessness, a richness in character, a sense of history. The phrase “They just don’t make things like they used to” holds true for me. Much of what’s made today simply lacks soul, not to mention quality.

I tell my clients I’m a huge advocate for using what you have. This can include family heirlooms, vintage finds, antiques, etc. Integrating these types of materials into your spaces tells a story about who you are and what’s important to you. It also makes a home feel like “you.” Completely succumbing to trends or buying solely from big box stores can rob your space of authenticity, warmth, and individuality. Another huge advantage of buying vintage is that it’s sustainable and benefits the environment.

3 steps to begin incorporating vintage items into your home:

  1. Do you have any family heirlooms you’ve been storing away? Bring those out and go through them.

  2. Is a parent or grandparent giving away things they no longer need? Take a look at their collections.

  3. Find estate sales and vintage stores in the area and peruse. What stands out to you?

I dive deeper into mixing old and new decor into your space in my Free Guide, which can be found at the bottom of this blog. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
